Kampala, Uganda – The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has launched a simplified version of the National Environment Act, Cap 181, translated into Ateso, Luganda, and Runyoro languages.

This initiative aims to bridge the environmental awareness gap, affecting 75% of Uganda’s population reliant on natural resources. Only 30% of Ugandans currently have access to environmental information.

Developed with support from the Wildlife Conservation Society, French Development Agency, and French Facility for Global Environment, the Popular Version targets:

  • 80% of Ugandans without access to environmental information
  • 40% increase in environmental awareness
  • 25% reduction in environmental degradation

NEMA Executive Director Dr. Barirega Akankwasah unveiled the Popular Version, emphasizing its role in promoting environmental protection and participation. “This simplified version will enhance community engagement and compliance,” Dr. Akankwasah stated.

NEMA plans to translate the version into more languages, acknowledging the support of institutions, individuals, and stakeholders.
