KAMPALA GARBAGE DUMP LANDSLIDE DEATH TOLL RISES TO 21

BY ECOMEDIA, AUGUST 12, 202

A devastating landslide at a massive garbage dump in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, has claimed 21 lives, according to police reports on Sunday. The disaster occurred late Friday, after weeks of torrential rain, when a huge mound of garbage at the city’s only landfill site collapsed, burying homes and residents.

President Yoweri Museveni has directed the prime minister to oversee the relocation of those living near the dump, while the government has launched an investigation into the cause of the landslide. The Inspectorate of Government has vowed to take action against any officials found negligent.

Rescue efforts continue, with at least 14 people rescued so far, and tents have been set up for the displaced. The Kiteezi landfill site has been a hazard for decades, with residents complaining of environmental pollution and danger.

This tragedy echoes similar disasters in Africa, including a 2017 garbage landslide in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which killed 115 people, and a 2018 disaster in Maputo, Mozambique, which claimed 17 lives.
