NAMIBIA’S CLIMATE CHAMPION: MARGARET ANGULA LEADS THE WAY

Angula has also been involved in informing Namibians about the risks of climate change so that they can be compelled to mobilize for action.

Africa is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate risk, with millions affected by increasingly severe natural disasters. The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), supported by IDRC, is mobilizing to address these challenges by sharing knowledge, building capacity, and rallying Southern leaders to improve the well-being of those most impacted.

Among these leaders is Margaret Angula, Namibia’s country lead for CDKN and a senior lecturer at the University of Namibia. For the past decade, Angula has led climate change adaptation research, integrating climate concerns into local and national agendas. Her team’s efforts highlighted that even if global warming is limited to 1.5°C, Namibia would face severe impacts, including increased temperatures and dry spells, threatening water supply, agriculture, and health.

Angula has trained government officials on climate impacts and the necessity of urgent action, strengthening coordination between national and regional governments for climate-resilient, gender-responsive rural development. Her team has also informed the public and parliamentarians through educational programming and multi-stakeholder workshops, advocating for solutions like water harvesting and small dams to combat water scarcity.

Now, Angula is establishing a climate change unit at the University of Namibia to inspire young Namibians and foster interdisciplinary research for targeted climate solutions. Her work is crucial for building a resilient future for Namibia.
