“UGANDA’S CALL TO ACTION: WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY UNITES FOR CHANGE”

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged all Ugandans to actively engage in tree planting initiatives to reclaim and rejuvenate our land for enhanced climate resilience. This heartfelt call was delivered through a speech delivered by the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Uganda, Honorable Robinah Nabbanja, as Uganda enthusiastically marked World Environment Day at Mafudu Primary School, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of the eastern district of Sironko.

The commemoration, held under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” took place on the 5th of June, echoing the global sentiment of raising consciousness and fostering proactive measures for environmental conservation. Prime Minister Nabbanja, representing President Museveni as the Chief Guest, underscored the significance of this day, emphasizing its role as a pivotal global platform established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, aimed at galvanizing collective efforts towards safeguarding our planet.

Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, the Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority, echoed the imperative of addressing contemporary environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Dr. Akankwasah articulated the pressing need for land conservation, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate-induced disasters like landslides, citing instances where settlements have encroached upon delicate terrains. He emphasized the importance of not just commemorating World Environment Day but also implementing tangible strategies on the ground to mitigate environmental degradation.

This year’s theme resonates profoundly with the urgent call to action for restoring degraded landscapes and safeguarding essential ecosystem services. The event saw the participation of esteemed dignitaries including ministers, Members of Parliament, religious leaders, opinion makers, and local authorities, signifying a unified commitment towards environmental stewardship.

The initiative, organized by the National Environment Management Authority in collaboration with various government agencies and partners, exemplifies a collective resolve to address environmental challenges and foster sustainable development for present and future generations.
