NAKIYANJA WETLAND DEPLETION: HAS NEMA SOLVED THE PROBLEM?

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has stopped the ongoing destruction of Nakiyanja wetland in a move to protect the critical ecosystem at Sonde, Kira Municipality in Wakiso District.

Nakiyanja is a critical wetland that drains into R. Sezibwa, which eventually serves the greater Kayunga and Mukono districts.

The suspension came as a result of alleged actions by Ms. Genagri Limited, which involved misleading inspectors with a certificate for a different location, highlighting environmental protection challenges.

“Our inspectors have established that the degradation was allegedly occasioned by Ms. Genagri Limited, who was hoodwinking the inspectors with a certificate of approval No. ΝΕΜΑ/ΕΙΑ/15422 issued to develop mixed residential and commercial structures on a small piece of dry land elsewhere. The developer instead illegally encroached on the nearby Nakiyanja wetland,” NEMA announced on Tuesday.

“A joint technical team from the Ministry of Water and Environment, NEMA, and the Environment Protection Police Unit effectively halted the development.”

The degradation of the wetland risks increased flooding, loss of biodiversity, and habitat destruction for various species.
