DEPUTY SPEAKER TAYEBWA PLEDGES FULL PARLIAMENTARY SUPPORT FOR MEDICAL CAMPS
Ishaka, Uganda – 27 September
The Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU) and Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH) have successfully concluded the National Free Surgical Week in Ishaka, Ankole region, conducting over 700 life-changing surgeries. This remarkable achievement has brought hope and relief to hundreds of Ugandans who had been struggling with various medical conditions.
Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, officiated at the closing ceremony, pledging full parliamentary support for future medical camps. “We will support all medical camps to bring healthcare closer to the people,” he assured, emphasizing Parliament’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility in Uganda.
The National Free Surgical Week addressed a wide range of medical conditions, including hernias, cataracts, orthopedic issues, goiters, hydroceles, fistulas, tumors, urological issues, and gynecological issues. Over 500 patients from five districts benefited from the camp, receiving quality healthcare services from a team of dedicated medical professionals.
One of the beneficiaries, Sam Ntumwa, shared his heartwarming story. “I regained my eyesight after a successful cataract surgery. Thank you, ASOU and KIUH!” he exclaimed, his eyes shining with gratitude. Stories like Sam’s underscore the transformative impact of the medical camp.
KIUTH continues to provide additional surgeries to patients who registered during the camp, leveraging its capacity and facilities. “We’ll finish the task, ensuring everyone receives the care they need,” said Dr. Omar Umi Bunu, KIUH CEO. This commitment to compassionate care is a testament to the hospital’s dedication to serving the community.
Dr. Moses Galukande, President of ASOU, thanked KIUH, partners, and medical teams for their tireless efforts. “This collaboration has made a significant difference in the lives of many Ugandans. We look forward to continuing this noble work.”
The success of the National Free Surgical Week demonstrates the power of partnership in improving healthcare accessibility and quality in Uganda. The next medical camp is slated for West Nile, promising to bring hope and healing to another community in need.
