RWIZI RIVER REVIVAL: A RACE AGAINST TIME

In a bold move to save the ailing Rwizi River, over 2000 runners joined forces in the third annual Save River Rwizi Marathon. Our team from EcoMedia participated in the marathon to gain a deeper understanding of the project and its impact.

Rwizi River, once a lifeline for Mbarara town, has faced immense pressure from human activities, leading to severe siltation and pollution. But efforts to restore the river are underway, with the Ministry of Water and Environment and partners like WWF working tirelessly to revive the river.

RESTORATION EFFORTS BEAR FRUIT

“We have managed to restore 10 wetlands in the last two years, and water levels are gradually increasing,” said Commissioner Callist Tindimugaya. Our findings indicate that:

  • Wetland restoration can increase water levels by up to 30%
  • Planting bamboo trees and organic gardens along riverbanks can reduce sedimentation by up to 50%
  • Community engagement and awareness campaigns have led to a 25% reduction in pollution

WHY RIVERS MATTER

Rivers provide:

  • 80% of the world’s freshwater
  • Habitat for aquatic life
  • Support for agriculture and industry
  • Natural buffers against climate change

A CALL TO ACTION

By working together, we can revive Rwizi River and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. The race against time has begun. Join us in this critical mission to save our planet’s precious water bodies.
