KAMPALA CITY’S GREEN CRISIS: BUSINESSMAN HAMKIGGUNDU SLAMS KCCA OVER TREE DESTRUCTION

Speaking at the tree handover ceremony, Kiggundu stated, "This is our city, this is our country; we have to support its development and beautify our surroundings."

Kampala city businessman Hamis Kiggundu has lambasted the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for destroying royal palm trees he donated to the Kampala Greening Campaign. The incident has highlighted the need for more trees in Kampala city to combat urbanization’s adverse effects.

Kiggundu’s donation of 100,000 trees in January aimed to beautify the city and promote a green environment. However, KCCA’s destruction of some trees has sparked outrage, with many calling for more sustainable practices.

“Kampala needs more trees, not less!” Kiggundu tweeted. “@KCCAUG must prioritize environmental conservation and work with stakeholders to achieve a greener, sustainable city.”

KCCA responded, “We appreciate @HKiggundu’s donation and commitment to a greener Kampala. We are reviewing our green development strategy to ensure a balance between urbanization and environmental conservation.”

Environmentalists argue that Kampala’s rapid urbanization has led to deforestation, air pollution, and loss of biodiversity. The city needs more trees to mitigate these effects and create a sustainable urban environment.

The incident serves as a wake-up call for KCCA and stakeholders to prioritize environmental conservation and work towards a greener, more sustainable Kampala city.
