NEMA TAKES ON SAND MINING HAZARD.

National Environment Management Authority, has impounded equipment being used to carry out sand mining on Lake Victoria. The operation commanded by Maj Joshua Karamaji is aimed at stopping the activities that have affected the water quality, and fish, and degraded the eco system.

Operations were realized in 4 sites within the Lwera wetlands.

According to Maj Joshua Karamaji the head of the environment protection force, they have
Impounded motor vehicles, trucks, and excavators (tractors). Demobilizing the mining sites where murram was dumped. Demolishing structures in a wetland was part of the actions taken there were reports of arrested proprietors and supervisors targeting prosecution of degraders.

Ensuring that there’s continued monitoring and surveillance of the sites for
compliance. Authorities mentioned that they are working with the local leaders to enable them to embrace better ways of enforcing the environmental regulations on sand mining in their locale.
